5 Cybersecurity Basics Every Business Should Know

Digital padlock representing cybersecurity

Most cyberattacks on small businesses aren’t sophisticated. They rely on weak passwords, outdated software and a single distracted click on the wrong email. The businesses that avoid trouble aren’t necessarily the most technical — they’re the ones that get a handful of basics right, consistently.

1. Use a password manager. Reusing the same password across email, banking and social accounts is still one of the most common ways businesses get compromised. A password manager makes strong, unique passwords practical.

2. Turn on two-factor authentication. Wherever it’s offered — email, hosting, banking — two-factor authentication stops the vast majority of account takeovers, even if a password leaks.

3. Keep software updated. Outdated WordPress plugins, old operating systems and unpatched apps are the easiest way in for attackers scanning the internet automatically. Updates aren’t optional maintenance; they’re security.

4. Back up your data, and test the backup. A backup you’ve never restored from isn’t a real backup. Ransomware and hardware failure both make this one non-negotiable.

5. Train your team to spot phishing. A well-crafted fake invoice or delivery notification email can fool anyone once. Five minutes of team training on what to check before clicking a link prevents most incidents.

We’ve seen this play out directly: a client’s WordPress site was compromised through a plugin that hadn’t been updated in over a year, and the first sign of trouble wasn’t a warning message — it was visitors reporting that the site redirected them to a strange page. Restoring it took longer than simply updating the plugin, a few months earlier, ever would have.

If you’re not sure where your business currently stands on these five basics, a short audit is usually enough to find the gaps — most small businesses are only missing one or two of them, not all five.

None of this requires a big security budget. It requires consistency. If you handle customer data, payments or business email, these five basics are the floor, not the ceiling.
