Football Offside Rule Explained in Simple Terms

Few rules in football spark as much debate as offside. It confuses new fans, and even experienced ones argue about close decisions. The idea behind it is actually simple: it stops attackers from waiting near the opponent’s goal for a long pass.

In simple terms, a player is in an offside position if, at the moment a teammate plays the ball to them, any part of their head, body or legs that can legally score is nearer to the opponent’s goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent. The goalkeeper usually counts as one of the opponents, so in practice the second-last opponent is often the last outfield defender.

Being in an offside position is not an offence by itself. A player is only penalised if, in the opinion of the referee, they become involved in active play — for example by playing the ball, interfering with an opponent, or gaining an advantage from being in that position.

There are situations where offside does not apply. A player cannot be offside directly from a goal kick, a throw-in or a corner kick. A player level with the second-last opponent is also considered onside.

Technology has changed how decisions are made. Video assistant referees (VAR) and semi-automated offside systems now help officials review tight calls, using tracking data to show where players were when the ball was played. Decisions can still be debated, but they are now based on far more evidence than a quick glance from a distant assistant referee.

Tips for watching: focus on the moment the pass is played, not on where the receiver ends up. Watch the line formed by the defenders — good defences step up together to catch attackers offside.

Understanding offside doesn’t remove the arguments, but it does make the game more enjoyable to follow. The Laws of the Game are maintained by IFAB and are updated from time to time, so check the latest wording if you need an exact ruling.
