Badminton for Beginners: Rules, Equipment and First Steps

Badminton is one of the most accessible racket sports. It is popular across South Asia and the Middle East, can be played indoors in almost any weather, and suits a wide range of ages and fitness levels. If you’re thinking of trying it, here is what to know.

The basics: in singles, one player faces one opponent; in doubles, there are two players per side. Players hit a shuttlecock over the net, and a rally ends when the shuttle lands in the court, fails to cross the net, or a fault is made. Matches are played as the best of three games, and each game goes to 21 points, with a player needing a two-point lead (up to a limit of 30).

Rally scoring means a point is awarded on every rally, whoever served. The serve must be hit underarm and below waist height, and it travels diagonally to the opponent’s service court.

Equipment is inexpensive to start. You need a racket, a few shuttlecocks (feather ones are used in competition, while nylon ones last longer for casual play) and non-marking indoor shoes with good grip. A lightweight racket is a sensible choice for beginners.

Technique comes first. Learn a relaxed grip, often described as “shaking hands” with the racket, and practise the basic strokes — serve, clear, drop shot and smash — slowly before adding power. Footwork matters as much as arm movement, so practise moving lightly back to the centre of the court after each shot.

Warm up for five to ten minutes with light jogging and shoulder, wrist and ankle mobility, because the sport involves quick lunges and overhead movements. Joining a beginners’ session or a club makes learning easier.

Start with short, friendly games and focus on enjoying the rallies.
