Healthy Sleep Habits: How to Sleep Better Tonight

Peaceful bedroom at night for good sleep quality

Sleep is not a luxury. It supports memory, mood, immune function and energy, yet many adults regularly sleep less than they need. The good news is that a few consistent habits can noticeably improve sleep quality.

Keep a regular schedule. Going to bed and waking up at roughly the same time every day, including weekends, helps your body clock settle. Most adults do well with seven to nine hours, although individual needs vary.

Build a wind-down routine. In the last hour before bed, dim the lights, put screens away or lower their brightness, and do something calm such as reading, light stretching or a warm shower.

Make the bedroom comfortable: cool, dark and quiet. Blackout curtains, a fan or earplugs can help, and reserving the bed for sleep trains your brain to link it with rest.

Watch what you consume. Caffeine can stay in the body for many hours, so avoid it in the afternoon and evening if you are sensitive. Heavy meals and large amounts of fluid close to bedtime can disturb sleep, and alcohol may make you fall asleep faster but usually worsens sleep quality later in the night.

Get daylight and move your body during the day. Morning light and regular physical activity support a healthy sleep rhythm, although intense exercise right before bed does not suit everyone.

If you lie awake for a long time, get up, do something quiet in dim light and return when sleepy rather than watching the clock. If you snore loudly, stop breathing during sleep, or have persistent insomnia or daytime exhaustion, speak to a healthcare professional.
